Today, the motorcycle club Sons of Charity is enlisting in 15-year-old Sophia Christensen’s fight against leukemia. Inaugurated in Anchor’s home town, San Francisco, this year the celebration goes national. If, like me, you’re part of this group, you chip away at your debt during the second annual Drink Steam Week, Sunday through Aug. With its flavor, body and complexity, this amber ale was a revelation. Steam WeekĪnchor Steam Beer’s influence on brewers and beer drinkers is hard to overstate. The festival’s profits will be directed to BikeSD, a nonprofit. A sampling of the latter: San Francisco’s Cellarmaker, Berkeley’s Fieldwork, Oregon’s Boneyard, Georgia’s Creature Comforts, New York’s Other Half, New Zealand’s Garage Project. They are locals (Abnormal, Alpine, Automatic, Burning Beard, Coronado, Mikkeller San Diego, North Park, Pizza Port, Stone, Societe) and a smart selection of out-of-towners. What raises this festival to greatness is the outstanding lineup of guest breweries. The same, though, can be said of Modern Times’ tasting rooms in Loma Portal and North Park. Saturday at San Diego’s Waterfront Park, is a fine opportunity to enjoy this brewery’s award-winning beers. Modern Times’ second annual Festival of Dankness, 3 to 7 p.m. Words to drink by Best of the week, local The Trader, by the way, is the only place that stocks last week’s King, Modern Times’ Accumulated Knowledge (6.2 percent), a West Coast IPA whose only serious drawback is its limited availability. Another virtue: Mischief is all over town, sold by supermarkets, specialty shops (I bought mine at Bine & Vine in Normal Heights), even Trader Joe’s. Available year-round, this beer shines in summer, complementing seasonal treats like steak salad with goat cheese and walnuts or grilled trout. Even with its potent alcohol level, Mischief never tastes sticky or thick.Ī confident ale in which every ingredient clicks, Mischief is this week’s King of Beer. That gives the beer sharper flavors and a crisper finish. This is an Americanized Belgian golden, with more emphasis on hops than spices. The biscuity malts, quaffable body, dashes of coriander and pepper - they all seem so right, so natural, it’s easy to overlook the craft behind this beer. Mischief (8.5 percent alcohol by volume), The Bruery’s Belgian-style golden ale, is so immediately pleasurable you may miss its underlying virtues.
